In this impossible environment, creatures that today would seem like something out of a nightmare dominated the planet: dragonflies the size of birds, millipedes over two meters long, and giant scorpions roamed a world where the rules of size had ceased to exist. But this world was not eternal. Over millions of years, the same processes that gave rise to these giants began to transform everything. The oceans were recovering from ancient extinctions, the first reptiles were taking a key evolutionary step with the amniotic egg, and climate change was beginning to dry up the vast swamps that sustained life.
