¿Por qué la evolución descartó estos diseños? El misterio del Cámbrico.

508 million years ago, in a shallow sea near what is now Canada, lived a three-centimeter-long animal that no one could draw for 70 years. They reconstructed it backward. Literally. It walked on what they thought were tentacles and breathed with what they thought were spines. When they finally understood it, in 1991, they also understood something bigger—that the Cambrian was the only time in the history of life that evolution was testing body plans as if they were proposals. Some worked. Most didn't. This is a journey to the Burgess Shale, the Canadian deposit where a Smithsonian geologist, in 1909, accidentally opened the window to the strangest experiment biology has ever conducted on this planet. In this video: • Why Hallucigenia is called that — and why the name makes sense • How Charles Walcott found the deposit in 1909 without knowing what he had • Anatomy of Opabinia: five eyes, a clawed proboscis, and zero offspring • Anomalocaris — the one-meter-long superpredator that almost no one reconstructed correctly until the 1980s • What a “body plan” (phylum) is and why almost all of them appeared in a single 20-million-year window • Why evolution, after the Cambrian, stopped inventing body plans and started refining them 📍 Key facts from the episode: Age of the Burgess Shale deposit: ≈508 million years (Middle Cambrian) Discovery: Charles Walcott, 1909, Canadian Rockies, BC Hallucigenia sparsa: first described in 1977 (Conway Morris), correctly reconstructed in 1991 (Ramsköld & Hou) Opabinia regalis: 5 stalked eyes, jointed proboscis with a terminal pincer Anomalocaris canadensis: up to 1 m in length, the largest known predator of the Cambrian Phyla known in the Burgess Shale: ≈20, almost all modern animal phyla represented (or their relatives) 🔗 Related videos: ← Previous: “The Year the Sun Went Out” — The Permian Told in Isotopes → Next: “Tropical Antarctica — Part 1 of 3” — Saturday, May 23. 50 million years ago, the coldest continent on the planet had palm trees. ⏱ Timestamps: 00:00 — The 3-centimeter creature that was upside down for 70 years 01:20 — Walcott, 1909, a mule, and an accidental fossil site 03:30 — Hallucigenia: the first reconstruction and why it failed 06:00 — Opabinia and its five eyes 08:30 — Anomalocaris: the predator that was late to its own description 11:00 — What is a phylum and why does it matter? 13:30 — The Cambrian window: 20 million years of invention 16:00 — Why evolution stopped inventing body plans 18:00 — A proposal, an answer, and a "no" 💬 If you had to bet — do you think evolution proved something in the Cambrian that we never find in the fossil record?
