Tracy McGrady: The Most Talented Player Who Never Won A Playoff Series Is This The Whole Story?

Seven All-Star selections. Seven All-NBA selections. Two consecutive scoring titles. A moment on December 9 2004 where he scored 13 points in 35 seconds against the San Antonio Spurs four consecutive three-pointers including a four-point play through Tim Duncan and a game-winner with 1.7 seconds left. And seven consecutive first-round playoff exits averaging 28.5 points per game. Tracy McGrady is the only player in NBA history to lose seven straight first-round playoff series while averaging that kind of scoring output. He left his cousin Vince Carter in Toronto in 2000 telling the official story about roster concerns for years before finally admitting in February 2026 that he left because he had loved Orlando since childhood. He arrived in Orlando to find Grant Hill broke his ankle before the season started and barely played for four years. He averaged 31.7 points per game across a seven-game playoff series against Detroit in 2003. He still lost. Then came Houston. Yao Ming. A 51-win season. A 2-0 series lead against Dallas in the 2005 playoffs. And a Game 7 where McGrady missed 6 of his first 7 shots and the Rockets lost by 40 points. The first time a Tracy McGrady team ever won a playoff series was in 2009. He was watching from the bench. Microfracture surgery on his left knee had ended his season. In 2012 he signed a professional baseball contract. He pitched one inning in a promotional game for the Sugar Land Skeeters of the Atlantic League. He struck out his only batter and walked away from baseball exactly the way he had walked away from basketball. On his own terms. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2017. Was Tracy McGrady a great player undone by injuries and bad luck? Or was there something in the decisions he made and the way he played that contributed to a career that never reached its obvious destination? This video makes the complete case for both sides. 👇 Was Tracy McGrady a victim of circumstance or did his own decisions cost him the legacy he deserved?
