When we talk about overeating through the lens of dopamine, it’s easy to slip into oversimplified explanations about food addiction, broken brains, or a lack of willpower. This video isn’t about any of that. I’m a psychotherapist with lived experience of binge eating, and in this video I explore how overeating can function as a dopamine regulation strategy — not because there’s something wrong with you, but because your nervous system is trying to cope. We’ll look at: 💫 What dopamine actually does (and what it doesn’t do) 💫 Why overeating can feel compulsive even when there’s very little pleasure 💫 How dopamine, stress, restriction, and relief-seeking interact 💫 Why “just trying harder” or controlling food often backfires 💫 The difference between hunger-driven eating and dopamine-driven eating 💫 Why regulation matters more than willpower for long-term change I also talk about why so much traditional advice around overeating feels unsatisfying, and why a nervous system–led approach can be more compassionate and more effective than focusing purely on behaviour change. If you struggle with overeating, binge eating, emotional eating, or feel caught in cycles of control and relief, I hope this video helps you make sense of what’s going on — without shame.
