Géricault took the subject of this immense painting, created in 1819, from a news story that shocked public opinion throughout Europe: the sinking of the frigate "Medusa" off the coast of Senegal. 150 people crowded onto a makeshift raft that drifted in a crescendo of horrors, including mutinies and episodes of cannibalism, until the ship "Argus" rescued only about fifteen survivors. The work depicts the dramatic, tense moment of the first sighting of the ship "Argus" on the horizon, on the thirteenth day. The video is also subtitled in Italian, English, French, and Spanish.
