Portal North Bridge Construction Progress: View from Train (October 2024)
As of October 18, 2024, the Portal North Bridge construction project has reached 70% completion. This key Phase I project in the Gateway Program aims to create a modern, high-level, fixed-span structure to replace the century-old Portal Bridge, a moveable swing-span that has long been a major bottleneck along the Northeast Corridor (NEC). Once completed, the Portal North Bridge will eliminate conflicts with maritime traffic, improve reliability for Amtrak and NJ TRANSIT passengers, allow for increased train speeds, and provide expanded capacity along the NEC.
