Portal Bridge Construction Progress: View from Train
As of September 10, 2024, the Portal North Bridge construction project is well underway, having reached 58% completion1. This key Phase I project in the Gateway Program aims to create a modern, high-level, fixed-span structure to replace the century-old Portal Bridge, a moveable swing-span that has long been a major bottleneck along the Northeast Corridor (NEC). Once completed, the Portal North Bridge will eliminate conflicts with maritime traffic, improve reliability for Amtrak and NJ TRANSIT passengers, allow for increased train speeds, and provide expanded capacity along the NEC.
