Can’t Quit a Bad Habit?
I tried to quit so many things by myself. Nicotine. Caffeine. Media. Scrolling. Bad habits I kept promising myself I would stop. I would go to bed at night and say, “Tomorrow I’m done.” Then tomorrow would come… and I would do it again. Over and over and over. What finally changed for me was accountability. When I told someone I respected — someone I did not want to let down — everything got different. Suddenly I was not just making a private promise to myself that I could quietly break. Someone else knew. Someone else was checking in. Someone else was holding me accountable to the decision I said I wanted to make. That has been a complete game changer for me. There is real power in accountability. Sometimes I will even tell two people. I need that support. I need that honesty. I need someone outside my own head. If you are trying to quit a bad habit, stop trying to do it completely alone. Find accountability. A friend. A family member. A spiritual group. A church group. A recovery group. An online group. A 12-step program. There is almost a support group for everything now. If you are trying to quit nicotine, caffeine, scrolling, media, sugar, porn, gambling, compulsive spending, or any other habit that keeps pulling you back in, accountability might be the missing piece. And if you are dealing with alcohol, drugs, or anything that could be medically dangerous to quit, do not try to handle that with accountability alone. Get real help, medical support if needed, and a recovery program. But for so many habits, accountability can be the thing that finally gets you moving.
