CNS Priming for Bench Press with @BeyondPowerOfficial VOLTRA 1 and @AdvancedMuscleMechanics LP GEN2
Prompted by my conversation with Joe Gray of @GrayMatterLifting (link here) • Live Kinetically on Athletic Applications,... Today's session was all about nervous system priming, force production, and building resilient tissue without accumulating unnecessary fatigue. I started with the Beyond Power Voltra 1 in Twin Mode using the Carbon Flex Cross Bar attachment. I performed 3 sets of bench press priming on the isokinetic setting, gradually manipulating tempo and increasing concentric intent with each set. Why? Isokinetic resistance matches your output in real time. The harder you push, the more resistance it gives you. That means I can expose the nervous system to very high levels of intent and motor unit recruitment while keeping the actual tissue loading and fatigue relatively low. Short term, this acts as a CNS wake-up call. We're increasing neural drive, improving rate of force development, potentiating the pressing muscles, and preparing the body to handle heavier loads on the barbell with better movement quality. Long term, this style of training has some incredible benefits. The accommodating resistance and controlled velocity allow us to accumulate high-quality repetitions, improve force expression through the entire range of motion, reinforce efficient motor patterns, and gradually build stronger tendons, connective tissue, and neurological efficiency without the same orthopedic cost of constantly chasing maximal loads. After the Voltra priming work, I moved into a 5x5 on the 45-degree incline bench press, increasing weight every set. Each bench set was immediately paired with a posterior chain primer using the Voltra 1 in Twin Mode again. This time I performed a high-to-low vertical row on the isokinetic setting for 3-4 explosive reps with high concentric resistance and rapid eccentric release. The row mimics the same force vector as the incline press, just in reverse. Why does that matter? Pressing and pulling are not enemies. They are partners. By training the opposite vector immediately after the press, we're improving scapular mechanics, reinforcing shoulder centration, activating the posterior chain, and helping the nervous system maintain balance around the shoulder complex. The rapid eccentric release also teaches the body to absorb and redirect force efficiently, something that translates extremely well to athletes. Everything was performed on the Advanced Muscle Mechanics Launch Pad Gen 2. The Launch Pad isn't just a bench attachment. It changes the pressing experience by creating a more stable shoulder position, improving thoracic extension, promoting better scapular mechanics, and giving the nervous system richer proprioceptive input through the upper body. The result is often a stronger press, better movement quality, and less unnecessary stress on the shoulders and neck. The goal isn't just to lift more weight today. The goal is to create a nervous system that can express force efficiently, connective tissue that can tolerate it repeatedly, and movement patterns that hold up for years. Train hard.
