Psychotherapy is your space to receive guidance, reflect, get to know yourself, and change behaviors, thoughts, and feelings. Marisa de Abreu Psychologist, CRP 06/29493 _________________________________________ Why acts of kindness and compassion are not reciprocal. What can be done to mitigate the negative effects of a lack of empathy? Understanding these terms helps you understand people's attitudes: -Empathy – You know what the person feels because you've been through the same thing. You can decide to help this person, support them, and welcome them. Or you can prefer to enjoy their suffering. Perhaps you think that since no one helped you, you won't help them either, and feel vindicated when you realize that others are going through the same thing and don't receive help. -Otherness – They haven't been through the same thing but are interested in learning, curious. They can use this knowledge for the good of others or not. It depends on each person. -Compassion – Understanding what others are going through, through empathy or otherness, they feel the need to do something for them, root for them, and mobilize for them. For those who offered good empathy, good otherness, and compassion and they didn't reciprocate: -They think this is their role; nothing obligates them to be the same. They feel grateful but don't feel compelled to be the same. Receiving compassion didn't teach them to have compassion. -They believe the world is finally giving them what they deserve, and due to the delay, they don't even need to be grateful. -They take pleasure in seeing their efforts as a way to feel vindicated by the people who should be offering compassion. .
