Here's a link to her channel, which contains a wealth of simple yet thorough information about gynecology:    / ginecologadianaalvarez   Genital warts, or condylomata acuminata, are benign lesions caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). Although malignancy is rare, they are a cause of concern, often excessive, for those who have them. Visit our website and download the PDF, listen to the podcast... https://aulaginecologia.com/mujeres/e... WHAT ARE THEY? Condylomas, also known as genital warts or condylomata acuminata, are benign lesions caused by infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV). HOW ARE THEY TRANSMITTED? The human papillomavirus is the most common sexually transmitted infection. It is estimated that 80-90% of the population has been in contact with this virus at some point, although in most women this infection does not cause any lesions. HOW CAN THEY BE PREVENTED? Using condoms is the best way to prevent HPV infection. Despite this, it does not offer complete protection since it does not cover all areas of the genital region that come into contact during sexual intercourse. WHAT SYMPTOMS DO THEY PRODUCE? Condylomas are generally asymptomatic. Sometimes they can cause itching, burning, or irritation. Very large lesions may be painful or bleed during intercourse. HOW ARE THEY DIAGNOSED? Condylomas are diagnosed through examination. If there is any doubt, the doctor may need to perform a biopsy for confirmation. HOW CAN THEY BE TREATED? There are multiple treatments for condylomata acuminata. Some can be self-administered, while others require administration by a healthcare professional. WHAT HAPPENS IF THEY ARE NOT TREATED? The progression of untreated condylomas is highly variable. In many cases, they may resolve on their own, although they may also remain unchanged or increase in number or size. CAN THEY RESUME? After genital warts are cured, there is a 20 to 30 percent risk of them recurring within the next 6 months. This can be due to the virus remaining in other areas or a new infection. HOW DOES IT AFFECT ME IF I'M PREGNANT? HPV infection or the presence of genital warts during pregnancy is not dangerous for the fetus and does not cause malformations. The risk of transmission of the virus is extremely low. Therefore, with few exceptions, a cesarean section should NOT be performed due to the presence of genital warts.
