We will show how classical realism, from Parmenides to Thomas Aquinas, was challenged by Descartes' rationalism, Hume's empiricism, Comte's positivism, and Kant's criticism (the main epistemological currents of modernity). And, most importantly: we will present the Brazilian response to this impasse. Mário Ferreira dos Santos, one of the country's greatest philosophers, constructed dialectical realism: a concrete philosophy that confronts the contradictions of the world without running away from them.
