Menko AHY Perkuat Konektivitas Bandara dan Destinasi Wisata
JAKARTA – As a follow-up to President Prabowo Subianto's directive to strengthen the role of airports as drivers of economic growth, tourism, and national connectivity, Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) led a Ministerial-Level Coordination Meeting on Strengthening Airport Ecosystem Governance on Thursday (June 25, 2026). President Prabowo directed the government to open and optimize as many international airports as possible in various regions to accelerate economic and tourism growth. Therefore, strengthening coordination across ministries and institutions is necessary to ensure the entire airport ecosystem works in an integrated manner. "Airports are not just places for planes to take off and land. Airports are Indonesia's gateways, the first thing tourists and investors see when they come to our country. Therefore, we want to provide increasingly better, integrated, modern, and world-class services," said Coordinating Minister AHY. As the coordinating ministry mandated to coordinate cross-sector infrastructure, the Coordinating Ministry for Infrastructure and Regional Development is pushing for the development of a legal framework to strengthen digital transformation and integrated public services at airports, while also clarifying synergies between agencies in providing services to the public. The second main agenda item discussed was accelerating the transformation of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport to achieve a five-star Skytrax rating by 2029. Coordinating Minister AHY assessed this target as realistic, considering that Soekarno-Hatta Airport's ranking has steadily improved in recent years thanks to various service and infrastructure transformations. The government is now preparing gradual steps to improve service quality, digitalization, passenger comfort, international connectivity, and the overall user experience. "We have a target that could be considered ambitious, but it has a basis. We are currently ranked 22nd in the world. Over the past three years, Soekarno-Hatta's ranking has continued to rise. Hopefully, by 2029, we can enter the top ten and achieve a five-star rating," said Coordinating Minister AHY. In addition to improving the quality of airport services, the government is also strengthening connectivity to the airport area and tourist destinations through the integration of various transportation modes. One breakthrough currently being prepared is the development of water taxis in Bali as an alternative transportation option to and from I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport. The presence of water taxis is expected to reduce congestion, accelerate tourist mobility, and strengthen Bali's position as an international tourism hub. This plan is also being promoted as part of the National Strategic Project (PSN). "In Bali, we will develop water taxis. This is expected to reduce travel time and provide an alternative to overcome congestion. So, once tourists land, they can immediately reach tourist areas more quickly," said Coordinating Minister AHY. During the meeting, the government also discussed the transformation of the airport sector towards a more environmentally friendly ecosystem through the Net Zero Airport concept. Coordinating Minister AHY explained that this transformation not only focuses on the development of energy-efficient terminals but also includes decarbonization of the entire airport ecosystem, from ground operations, energy efficiency, to the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The government is targeting the initial implementation of a one percent SAF blend for international flights from Soekarno-Hatta Airport and I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport starting in 2027, in line with the global trend toward low-emission air transportation. "In addition to ensuring an adequate supply of conventional aviation fuel, we are also developing a much cleaner Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). God willing, it will be implemented for international flights from Jakarta and Bali in 2027," said Coordinating Minister AHY. According to Coordinating Minister AHY, strengthening airport governance is not merely about improving airport quality, but also part of the national strategy to strengthen connectivity, increase tourism competitiveness, streamline logistics, support investment, and accelerate inclusive and sustainable economic growth. "We want to ensure that the airport sector becomes a lever for national connectivity, strengthening economic growth, equitable development, and improving the quality of public services for the community," concluded Coordinating Minister AHY.
