Biographie : Bertrand Herz a été déporté à l’âge de 14 ans par le convoi 81 parti le 30 juillet 1944 de la gare de Toulouse-Matabiau à destination des camps de Buchenwald et de Ravensbrück. Il est déporté avec ses parents, Willy et Louise, sa sœur Françoise et son époux. Bertrand, son père et son beau-frère sont envoyés à Buchenwald alors que sa mère et sa sœur sont transportées jusqu’au camp de Ravensbrück. Sa mère ne reviendra pas de déportation. Bertrand et sa famille sont affectés au petit camp de Buchenwald et ne travaillent pas dans un premier temps. En décembre 1944, il est transféré avec son père au Kommando Niederorschel où il travaille douze heures par jour à l’assemblage d’ailes d’avion. Son père meurt d’épuisement. Le petit camp de Buchenwald est évacué par une marche de la mort vers le camp principal le 1er avril 1945. Bertrand, souffrant de la dysenterie, évite la mort grâce à l’aide du kapo de son kommando qui fait arrêter la marche. Le groupe arrive à Buchenwald le 10 avril 1945. Ils sont libérés par la résistance du camp et les troupes américaines le lendemain. Bertrand arrive à l’hôtel Lutetia de Paris le 29 avril 1945. Il retrouve Françoise, qui a également survécu, et son frère Jean-Claude qui a évité la déportation. Bertrand participe activement à la vie de l’Association Buchenwald Dora et Kommandos. Bertrand Herz est décédé le 20 mai 2021 à Paris 16e. Ce témoignage a été recueilli par le Mémorial de la Shoah en 2004.
