[Chongqing,China]Baisha Town: A Town Living with Morning Mist and River Waters

This time, I came to Baisha Town in Jiangjin, Chongqing. The name “Baisha” means “white sand.” It is said to come from the white color of the sand along the Yangtze River when illuminated by sunlight. Located in southwestern Chongqing, Baisha sits on the banks of the Yangtze River. It is one of Chongqing’s large towns, with an urban scale and population size comparable to that of a medium-sized county town. Its history as a town stretches back more than a thousand years. Baisha once flourished because of river transport along the Yangtze. Its docks, old streets, stilted houses, teahouses, and everyday riverside life have together shaped the unique character of this town. Unlike many popular tourist destinations, it is not noisy or overly commercialized. Instead, it preserves a more authentic and slower-paced way of life typical of old riverside market towns along the Sichuan–Chongqing section of the Yangtze. In the early morning, Baisha is wrapped in mist over the river. The old streets have not fully awakened yet, but the teahouses by the riverside are already filled with people drinking tea and chatting. Some people wash clothes by the river, some set up small stalls along the street, and others sit quietly in front of old houses, watching passersby come and go. Life here is not glamorous, but it carries a warmth and vitality that seem to have continued from deep within time. Walking into Baisha Town, you will see stone-paved streets, old docks, narrow lanes, stilted riverside houses, and traditional trades and everyday scenes that are now rarely seen in modern cities. Together, they form an ancient town that is still very much alive. This video is not just a visit to an old town. It is more like a record of an old way of life by the Yangtze River. Through my camera, I hope to show you the morning mist, river waters, old streets, and ordinary daily life of Baisha Town in Chongqing.
