Shoei Neotec 3: The Quietest Helmet Tested

Helmet Noise Test - Shoei Neotec 3 (Real World Test at 65 mph) In this video, I measured the inside-the-helmet noise levels while riding at a steady 65 mph with my Shoei Neotec 3 modular helmet. The goal was to capture real-world noise levels that touring and commuting riders experience. Full Disclosure: I am not a sound engineer nor do I work in the audio measurement field. I was simply curious about how loud it really gets inside the helmet while riding, so I did my best to collect this data using accessible tools and methods. These results are not laboratory-certified but reflect my own real-world experience. Motorcycle Used: 2023 BMW R 1250 GS (stock exhaust, Puig windscreen) Test Conditions: Speed: 65 mph (steady highway cruise) Helmet: Shoei Neotec 3 (modular helmet) Test 1: Lid (visor) OPEN Test 2: Lid (visor) CLOSED Equipment Used: Microphone: Dayton iMM-6 (Low Range version) Connection: USB-C to 3.5mm adapter Device: iPhone running AudioTools app (v17.23) Measurement type: A-weighted SPL (Sound Pressure Level) Test Results: Configuration Average (LAeq) Peak Lid Open 84.7 dB 88.8 dB Lid Closed 83.7 dB 86.6 dB Even with the lid closed, wind turbulence inside the helmet creates significant variations in noise levels. The Shoei Neotec 3 performed very well for a modular helmet, showing about a 1 dB drop in average noise levels with the lid closed. These measurements give real-world data for anyone concerned about helmet noise on long rides. While every rider’s setup (bike, windscreen, riding position) may produce slightly different numbers, this test gives a solid reference point.
