In 1995, we welcomed economist Maria da Conceição Tavares to Roda Viva. Maria da Conceição Tavares came from Portugal fleeing the Salazar dictatorship and became one of the most respected figures in the economic field here. A professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and Unicamp, she was a guru to a legion of left-wing economists. After twenty years in opposition, she surprised everyone by praising the economic plan of Minister Dilson Funaro when José Sarney was president. But it wasn't long before she returned to being an implacable critic of subsequent plans and governments. She was elected federal deputy for the PT in Rio de Janeiro. Professor Maria's ideas and controversies reached the National Congress.
