Milton Santos - O Gênio da Geografia | Documentário | 27/05/2026

This Wednesday (27), at 10:30 pm, TV Cultura premieres the unreleased documentary Milton Santos – The Genius of Geography, a production of the station's Journalism department that celebrates the centenary of the birth of one of the greatest Brazilian intellectuals of the 20th century. The film revisits the personal, academic and political trajectory of the Bahian geographer Milton Santos, internationally recognized for his critical vision of globalization and for his reflections on inequality, territory and society. The production brings together testimonies from Professor Fernando Conceição, Milton Santos' authorized biographer; geographer and researcher Billy Malachias; and Nina Santos, Milton's granddaughter and PhD in Communication. The documentary also includes excerpts from an interview given by Milton Santos to filmmaker Silvio Tendler, four months before his death. Milton Santos – The Genius of Geography shows how the Brazilian intellectual's thought remains current and influential in Brazil and the world, more than two decades after his death. #MiltonSantos #TVCultura #Documentary #Journalism #Geography #weareculture 00:00:05 – Introduction: The geographer's legacy. 00:03:27 – Recognition and worldwide importance. 00:07:09 – Origins and education in Bahia. 00:09:44 – Academic career and doctorate in France. 00:11:12 – Exile, dictatorship, and international trajectory. 00:15:02 – Literary work and worldview. 00:17:06 – Concepts: Nature of space and information. 00:18:31 – Milton Santos as an intellectual source. 00:22:56 – Globalization: fable, perversity, and possibility. 00:29:03 – Critique of politics and "market democracy". 00:31:07 – The importance of cities. 00:32:44 – Racism and the role of the black intellectual. 00:52:49 – Centenary and tributes (Museum of the Favelas).
