Brest. Late 1970s. Flooding on the Bug: rain and melting snow in the Tatra Mountains caused a flood. The Western Bug blocked the Mukhavets River, forcing its waters to crash onto the city. The Wulka and Soja rivers are underwater. Rescuers work around the clock in the downpour. Result: a Soviet-Polish agreement against the flood. The Soja river is demolished, residents are relocated. Fertile land is divided into dachas for veterans – convenient plots near the city with sheds and fences. Nearby is the Brest River Port, the jewel of the Dnieper-Bug Canal. Crane after crane unloads barges of Kryvyi Rih ore into railcars nonstop. Direction: East Germany, Poland. Return – high-quality rolled steel products to the USSR. The port breaks records. Winter is a “rest”: barge repairs in the cluttered waters. There are no backwaters. The city administration's decision: we're building a backwater on dachas. Dacha owners were asked to move out, but veterans are resisting. The result: bulldozers and fire did their job. Now it's an eco-nest in the city center, with its own ecosystem. Peace and the charm of nature. It would seem an impossible neighborhood, but Brest got lucky. An eco-trail winds along the Mukhavets River, meandering past the Soya lakes. The area is, as they say, picturesque. The city is divided by the Mukhavets River, and the area near the river has its own unique features that are definitely worth seeing.
