The Greatest Physicist of His Generation Predicted an Impossible Particle in 1937, Then Vanished

In 1937, Ettore Majorana published the equation for a particle that is its own antiparticle, a thing identical to its own opposite, with no enemy because it is its own enemy. A few months later he withdrew everything in his bank, boarded a boat into the dark off the coast of Sicily, and vanished. Seventy-seven years later, in 2015, the Italian state reopened the case and officially concluded that he had not died at all. This is the story of the man Enrico Fermi ranked with Galileo and Newton, and of the impossible particle he left behind. We trace it from Paul Dirac's discovery of antimatter and the strange infinite ocean his equation seemed to require, through Majorana's years inside Fermi's Via Panisperna group in Rome, to the 1937 paper that quietly proposed something physics still cannot confirm or deny. The neutrino, the most abundant matter particle in the universe, may have no opposite. It may be its own antiparticle. And whether it is or not turns out to be tied to one of the oldest questions there is. Why is there something rather than nothing. We follow the search on both fronts at once. The forensic trail of the disappearance, the two letters that contradict each other, the monastery theory, the flight to South America, and the photograph of a man called Bini taken in a Venezuelan currency exchange in 1955. And the physics that came back to life at the same time. Neutrino mass and oscillation, the seesaw mechanism that explains why the neutrino is so impossibly light, and the underground experiments hunting for neutrinoless double beta decay, the single impossible event that would prove Majorana right. GERDA, the Majorana Demonstrator, and KamLAND-Zen, buried under mountains, cooled to near absolute zero, watching trillions of atoms in the dark for a decay that may take longer than the age of the universe to happen even once. If neutrinos are Majorana particles, then leptogenesis can explain why a sliver of matter survived the great annihilation that should have left the cosmos as nothing but light. Which means the property Majorana wrote down before he disappeared may be the reason there is something rather than nothing, the reason you exist at all. The equation is still on the page. The man is, officially, unaccounted for. And the most basic question about the matter in your own body, whether at its root it is its own opposite, is still sitting unanswered under a mountain.
