In 1956 a Woman Proved the Universe Is Left-Handed — The Two Men Who Asked Her Took the Nobel

She proved that the universe can tell left from right. For three hundred years, every known law of nature was mirror-symmetric, blind to the difference between a left hand and its reflection. Wu shattered that assumption. She showed that the weak nuclear force is fundamentally left-handed, that reality itself has a built-in preference for one hand over the other. And the following year, faster than almost any award in its history, the Nobel Prize for the discovery went to the two men who had asked her to look. Her name was not on it. This is the full story of the fall of parity and the woman written out of it. We trace the comfortable belief that nature could not distinguish left from right, the tau-theta puzzle that first cracked it open, and the question Tsung-Dao Lee and Chen Ning Yang found buried in the literature, that parity had never once been tested in the weak interaction. We walk through the cobalt-60 experiment Wu designed and led at the National Bureau of Standards, the coldest and most demanding measurement of its era, run by a team of five against a clock that gave them minutes at a time. We follow Wolfgang Pauli's confident bet that the universe was symmetric, and the moment he learned he had lost it. Then we go deeper, into what the broken mirror actually means. How parity violation finally gave physics a way to define left and right to a civilization on the far side of the galaxy. How it exposed a missing particle, the right-handed neutrino that nature never built. How it led to CP violation, to the reason matter outlived antimatter in the first instant of the universe, and possibly to the reason every protein in your body is left-handed. Two broken symmetries run through this story. The one in nature that no one can explain, and the one in human judgment that kept Wu off the prize across twenty-three nominations and sixteen years. Only one of them ever had a reason. This is not speculation. Every claim is grounded in the original papers, the verified experiments, and the words of the physicists who were there. The mirror is broken. It always was. And the woman who first saw it was thanked from the stage in Stockholm and left off the medal. The claims in this video are drawn from the following sources. T.
