Testing New Otimos Camping Gear | Norfolk Broads Wild Camp

After a hot May Bank Holiday weekend with temperatures reaching 34°C, I headed out for a solo overnight wild camp on Haddiscoe Island at the southern end of the Norfolk Broads. With the heat still lingering, Rex stayed at home this time as I wasn't prepared to risk him in a warm tent. The walk in was a familiar 40-minute trek from the car, following the straight tracks across the marshes in search of peace, quiet and a perfect spot to pitch up for the night. The evening couldn't have been better, with sightings of a barn owl, heron and several marsh harriers as the sun set across the Norfolk landscape. This trip was all about testing some new lightweight camping gear: 🏕️ Otimos Nomad X-Lite Tent 🛏️ Otimos UL850 Quilt 💤 Alpkit Radiant Sleeping Pad The ‪@OtimosOutdoorGear‬ Nomad X-Lite was quick and easy to pitch, with its stealthy green colour blending perfectly into the surroundings. Although it's smaller than the tents I'm used to, the 1.5-person design still felt comfortable and spacious enough for a solo camp. The UL850 Quilt performed brilliantly on a warm night. While conditions were nowhere near its claimed -6°C comfort range, it kept me warm, comfortable and packed down impressively small. The Alpkit Radiant sleeping mat, with its impressive R-value of 7.2, completed the sleep system perfectly. Comfortable, easy to inflate and supportive throughout the night, even when sitting or kneeling on it. Just as I settled in with some YouTube before sleep, the weather had other ideas. Distant rumbles of thunder rolled across the marshes and a quick check of the forecast revealed a newly issued weather warning. What started as a calm summer evening soon turned into an unexpected storm, providing the perfect real-world test for the new tent. Heavy rain arrived during the night, but the Nomad X-Lite remained rock solid and completely unfazed. The reward came in the morning with a stunning Norfolk Broads sunrise and clear skies. The only reminder of the overnight storm was the soaking wet grass on the walk back to the car! Overall, first impressions of this new camping setup are extremely positive. I'm looking forward to getting the gear out again and testing it in tougher conditions later in the year.
