The Manufacture Royale brand has perhaps the most astonishing history. The manufacture was first founded in 1770 by... Voltaire. Yes, that same Voltaire – the great philosopher! In the 21st century, the brand made a triumphant return to the world of haute horlogerie, declaring: "You'll either love our watches or hate them – there's no in-between." The 1770 Voltige (which translates as "aerobatics" or "tightrope walker") lives up to its name. It doesn't have a tourbillon, but the enormous balance wheel is literally suspended in mid-air on a high bridge directly above the deep, three-dimensional dial! Incidentally, the renowned Eric Giroud, the creator of many masterpieces for MB&F, contributed to the design of this series.
