Still Wakes the Deep Gameplay on PS5 Pro - The Most Atmospheric Horror Game I Have Played in Years

Welcome back to Barely a Gamer! So today we are playing Still Wakes the Deep on the PS5 Pro. Some horror games try to scare you, but this game makes you feel trapped. A Game That Earned Its Reputation Developed by The Chinese Room and published by Secret Mode, Still Wakes the Deep was released in June 2024 on PS5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC. It went on to win three BAFTA Games Awards, which tells you everything you need to know about the level of craft behind this game. In June 2025, the Siren's Rest story DLC was released, adding another chapter to the Beira D's haunting legacy. What Is the Game About? You play as Caz McCleary, an offshore electrician working on the Beira D when something terrible is unearthed from beneath the ocean floor. From the very first moment, the rig feels alive. The voice acting is phenomenal, especially the authentic Scottish performances that make every conversation believable and every desperate cry for help heartbreaking. These are not faceless NPCs. They are exhausted workers trying to survive the impossible. The creature design is disturbing without being overused, and rather than relying on cheap jump scares, the horror builds through tension, isolation, and an overwhelming sense of dread that allows your imagination to fill in the blanks in the most unsettling ways. Gameplay and What Makes It Work Gameplay is intentionally simple, focusing on exploration, environmental puzzles, and frantic escape sequences rather than combat. The first-person perspective immerses you completely, and that is one of my favourite types of experiences in horror. Some players may find the mechanics limited, but that helplessness is exactly what makes the experience so effective. You are not a hero. You are just trying to survive. Siren's Rest - The DLC Chapter Then comes Siren's Rest, the story expansion that takes you back to the Beira D, except this time it is resting hundreds of feet beneath the ocean. Set almost ten years after the base game's events, players return to Beira D as Mhairi, who leads a saturation dive to learn more about the truth behind the oil drilling platform's disaster and what happened to its crew. The DLC shifts the horror from claustrophobic corridors to the crushing silence of deep-sea exploration. Rather than trying to outdo the original, Siren's Rest acts as a quieter and more melancholic epilogue. I did sometimes wish for more answers, and I wish the DLC was a bit longer. Performance on PS5 Pro There is no dedicated PS5 Pro Enhanced patch for this game. You are playing the base PS5 version which gives you two modes to choose from. One focuses on resolution and targets 30 FPS, and the other focuses on performance at 60 FPS. For me personally, 60 FPS is the only way to play this game. The 30 FPS mode felt almost unplayable because it ruins the fluidity of the experience. Should You Play It? Still Wakes the Deep is one of the finest narrative horror games of recent years, blending unforgettable atmosphere, exceptional Scottish performances, and emotional storytelling into a terrifying experience that lingers long after the credits roll. Siren's Rest may be shorter and less impactful than the base game, but it is a worthwhile return for anyone who could not let go of the Beira D. Together they create a complete journey about fear, loss, and the terrifying unknown. The greatest horror here is not always the monster chasing you. Sometimes it is being stranded, powerless, and realizing that no one is coming to save you.
