Abide With Me (arr. Moses Hogan) | Alma Consort

Alma Consort performs Abide with Me arranged by Moses Hogan, conducted by Luca Wetherall. Recorded in St Barnabas Ealing, London. Henry Francis Lyte wrote the text of Abide with Me in 1847, weeks before tuberculosis killed him. He took the refrain from Luke 24:29, the disciples' plea to the risen Christ on the road to Emmaus. No settled tune existed until 1861, when William Henry Monk composed Eventide for the first edition of Hymns Ancient and Modern. Moses Hogan (1957–2003), the New Orleans pianist and conductor best known for his settings of African American spirituals, later recast the hymn for unaccompanied voices, bringing the harmonic language and expressive rubato of the spiritual tradition to Monk's melody.
