Allegri: Miserere (with top C!) | Alma Consort

Alma Consort performs Gregorio Allegri's Miserere mei, Deus conducted by Izzy Mohan. Filmed in St Martin's West Drayton, London. Gregorio Allegri composed the Miserere in the 1630s for use in the Sistine Chapel during Holy Week. Setting Psalm 51, the work alternates a five-voice choir with a four-voice ensemble and became so jealously guarded by the Vatican that its distribution was forbidden for over a century — until the fourteen-year-old Mozart transcribed it from memory following a single hearing in 1770. The soprano top C heard in this performance is an interpolation embedded in the performing tradition rather than Allegri's original text, but it has become inseparable from the work as it is now known.
