Upcycling extrem: Mit wenig Geld und witzigen Ideen gestalten Marc & Lu ihr Haus | ARD Room Tour

Marc and Lu's house is a huge upcycling project. They furnished it with lots of ideas and little money. Their entire initial furnishings only cost 500 euros. Everything is second-hand, comes from bulky waste or classified ads and the two have upgraded much of it through upcycling. Lu in particular has a knack for upcycling and for repurposing old things and giving them a new lease of life. Marc has the necessary craftsmanship to implement Lu's ideas. For example, the old post cupboard serves as storage space, an old door as a worktop and the sink in the kitchen was used as a feeding trough in the garden: upcycling on a grand scale. Lu and Marc have upcycled things that are no longer used and have thus found a new use in the house - it all cost very little money and has its very own charm. This is important to Lu because she loves this upcycled look - nothing in the house is run-of-the-mill. Before Lu and Marc moved to Lensahn in Schleswig-Holstein with their two children, the family lived in Spain. They came back to Germany with light luggage. They sold their furniture in Spain. They have been renting here since 2022 and a lot has happened since then. Originally, the house was divided into two residential units. Lu and Marc have removed walls, uncovered the old ceiling beams and renovated a lot - most of it themselves. They like to get stuck in and have a knack for DIY and upcycling. In return, the rent for the house with a living space of 200 m² and the 2,500 m² plot is comparatively low. They discussed all their ideas with the landlady of the house and got her approval. In principle, a landlord can always make his approval dependent on the tenants agreeing to reverse the conversion measures before they move out. That was completely fine with Lu and Marc. The house used to belong to the Güldenstein estate. However, it was not the Duke of the House of Oldenburg himself who lived here, but his servants and maidservants - especially on the first floor. The upper floor was used for storage - which can still be seen today from the winches on the wall of the house. For Lu and Marc, old objects like these tell their own story and bring the house to life. Today, there is a large play and sports room on the upper floor where the children can do gymnastics, swing and play. Up here is also the family bathroom with blue walls, soft artificial turf and lots of upcycling and DIY products. The large, natural garden is a pure play paradise for young and old. There is a mud pit, a rabbit hutch with two rabbits in love and two tortoises. For the grown-ups there is a “chill lounge” - of course also an upcycling project - which invites you to linger even when it rains. There are fields and forests behind the house and the sea is just a ten-minute drive away. For the family, their home is a feel-good home. They can put all their upcycling and DIY ideas into practice here. Lu has a few more up her sleeve and they all cost very little money.
