Is the dream of Chile's Megaport over? In this video, we react to the damning international report by the Dutch consulting firm Port Consultants Rotterdam B.V. (PCR), commissioned by Camport, which analyzes Chile's port logistics network toward the year 2050. The conclusions are a cold shower: current market conditions indicate that it is NOT necessary to invest in the Outer Port of San Antonio in the next 20 to 25 years. While the US$4.45 billion megaproject is called into question, large-scale terminals on the Pacific coast, such as Callao and Chancay in Peru, are entering the market with equal or better operating conditions, infrastructure, and a much more favorable geographic location to act as hub ports. What does this mean for Chilean foreign trade? Will we become a feeder port for Peru? We analyze the technical and commercial data that justify this drastic change in the landscape.
