The Future of Patagonia's Glaciers | Climate Change I ARTE Documentary
Across the globe, glaciers are shrinking due to global warming. But the Perito Moreno glacier in Argentinian Patagonia is currently stable. This monstrous wall of ice draws tourists from far and wide. But for how much longer? WATCH: Siberia: The Melting Permafrost - • Siberia: The Melting Permafrost | ARTE Doc... Greenland, Antarctica, Himalayas ...the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has sounded the alert: glaciers are melting everywhere. The Andes are one of the fastest melting regions of the world. In Patagonia, a Franco-Argentinian team of scientists have been analysing satellite images since 2000. Their conclusion is alarming: between 2000 and 2018 Patagonian glaciers lost an average mass equivalent to a 4-storey building. In Los Glaciares National Park in Argentina, the 750 square kilometer Upsala Glacier is one of the most affected in the past two decades. It recedes about 300 meters and loses 20 meters in width each year. The most famous glacier, the Perito Moreno, a true monster of 250 square kilometers - twice the size of Paris - is one of the few glaciers in the world not to be affected. In this same region of Patagonia, the construction of two hydroelectric dams has drawn concerns from the local residents, the Mapuche and Tehuelche communities. They denounce the consequences of this project on the environment, the ecosystem and, ultimately, on the glaciers.
