How Singapore’s Urban Design Makes Way for Wildlife | WILD HOPE
How does a densely populated, skyscraper-lined nation like Singapore transform into a lush green oasis where wildlife thrives alongside humans? The island nation’s ambitious vision of becoming a “City in Nature” aims to integrate urban living with biodiversity and requires careful coordination between government leaders, designers of the urban landscape, and its citizens. By carving out wildlife habitats amidst the built environment, the National Parks Board seeks to prioritize biodiversity in urban planning and bring back species previously wiped out. An architect helping to drive this change is the butterfly-loving Khew Sin Khoon, whose innovative designs have integrated green habitats into Singapore’s airports, institutional buildings, and even hospitals. Also at the forefront are passionate youths Tay Jing Xuan and Lumin Ong, a couple hunting down critical data about their beloved dragonflies to spur conservation efforts, and spreading awareness of how to live alongside wildlife, especially when conflicts with humans occur. This synergy between bold policies, community action, and biophilic design makes Singapore a unique example of how nature and humans can coexist in harmony.
