Star Trek Voyager – Across the Unknown • Episode VII “A Machine in a Sector of Fire”
Personal, Classified Log — U.S.S. Voyager Main Computer Episode VII | “A Machine in a Sector of Fire” This entire sector feels tense. Metallic. Hostile. As if the stars themselves are waiting for something to break. The day begins with maneuvers — not the elegant kind Starfleet teaches at the Academy, but the desperate kind you perform when the quadrant keeps throwing enemies at you. The Kazon have stolen Federation technology. Transporter modules. Shield components. Pieces of me. Pieces of home. They use them for raids now. Clumsy, brutal raids. But dangerous enough. Janeway stands on the bridge, weighing her options. A direct assault on a Kazon command ship… or a diversion, a tactical misdirection, a dance in the dark. Either way, I know I will be the one absorbing the hits. The Raiders arrive first. Small ships, fast and angry. Their weapons scrape across my shields — good thing engineering upgraded them earlier. Every improvement B’Elanna forced into my systems pays off now. The crew moves with precision. Phasers fire. Thrusters flare. I twist through the void like a tired animal refusing to die. With the help of the away team — clever, reckless, determined — the mission concludes. Another crisis survived. Another scar added. But the day is not done. Jetrel — A Ghost from Rinax A haakonian scientist requests permission to board. Jetrel. A name that makes Neelix’s voice crack. He claims he is here to diagnose Neelix with a metagen disease. But the truth unfolds slowly, painfully: Jetrel is dying. And he is trying to undo the horror he once unleashed. He attempts to use my transporter to reconstruct the molecular remains of the victims — to pull life out of death. A desperate act. A futile act. The crew debates morality. Science. Responsibility. In the end, Jetrel’s world cannot be saved. But his research leaves behind a fragment of new technology — something small, something useful, something that might matter later. A sad trade. But out here, sadness is common currency. Faces — The Vidiians Return Then comes the second mission. The Vidiians. Harvesters of organs. Masters of genetic cruelty. They capture B’Elanna. Split her DNA. Divide her into two living halves: one human, fragile and thoughtful; one Klingon, fierce and burning. Both incomplete. Both suffering. The crew fights through a hostile planet to retrieve her. Sickbay becomes a battlefield of biology and hope. The Doctor works with cold brilliance, stitching two halves back into one whole. We succeed. B’Elanna lives. And the Klingon half — stronger, louder, wilder — remains with us as a separate being. A gift. A complication. A reminder of what the Vidiians can do. End of Day The sector quiets. Not peaceful — just quiet. The kind of quiet that follows exhaustion. I am Voyager. I carry their victories. I carry their wounds. I carry their strange new passengers. And I continue forward. Always forward.
