The Day the Sun Becomes a Monster
What happens when the Sun dies? In roughly five billion years, the Sun will swell into a red giant, swallow Mercury and Venus whole, and put Earth's own survival in serious doubt, before collapsing into a small, dense white dwarf. Right now, in the daytime sky, the Sun looks utterly dependable, a small, steady, golden disk you could block with your thumb held at arm's length. It has looked that way for the whole of human history, and for billions of years before anyone existed to look up. But the Sun is not fixed. It is a furnace slowly consuming its own fuel, and every furnace, however patient, eventually runs low. This video tells the complete story of what happens next: how a calm, middle-aged star becomes something closer to a monster, swelling until it swallows the world nearest it, then the next world after that, and very likely ours as well. How it sheds itself into space in a slow motion catastrophe with no explosion at all. And what is finally left behind: a small, hot, dim ember, quietly cooling for far longer than the universe has yet existed. None of this happens soon.
