The Star That Has Been Burning Since the Beginning of Time
What is the oldest star in the universe, and could a red dwarf really still be burning since almost the beginning of time? In the outer halo of the Milky Way, astronomers have found stars so faint that no backyard telescope could ever show them, and so old that their light still carries the imprint of a universe barely finished cooling from its own birth. This is the full story of how a star's fate gets decided before it is even born: the universe's first light, three hundred eighty thousand years after the beginning, the giant, short-lived Population III stars that seeded the young cosmos with heavier elements, the simple rule of mass and fuel that lets a small red dwarf outlive entire galaxies of brighter neighbors, the slow internal stirring that keeps one burning through nearly all of its fuel instead of just its core, and the cosmic noon when star formation across the whole universe peaked and began to fade.
