Three nights spent together on Daegu's Bukseong-ro. Listen to the stories of those delicious nights. ■ Romanticism that blooms at night: Bukseong-ro food stalls Daegu's Bukseong-ro tool alley enjoyed its heyday in the 1970s, when it was said to house nearly every hardware store in the country. However, due to the economic downturn, it is now deserted. At 6 p.m., when the hardware stores close, the Bukseong-ro alley begins its delicious transformation. As the scent of briquettes slowly wafts through the alleyways of Bukseong-ro, the 14 food stalls dotted around the area begin to bloom, one by one. Most stalls on Bukseong-ro offer only two options: charcoal-grilled bulgogi and udon. Even those with a little less have only two options, and the stories of life flow through the air all night long. Three days are filled with the nighttime chatter (夜話) of stall owners grilling meat over charcoal briquettes, and regulars with 30 or 40 years of experience, as well as young people in their 20s, resembling the flowers (夜花) that bloom at night on the corners of the old alleys of Bukseong-ro, Daegu. ■ A spell that opens the door to happiness "Auntie! Give me another bottle of soju!" A pleasant buzz of intoxication signaled the dawn of a vibrant night on Bukseong-ro! Even young people in their 20s, exhausted by the spec war and sleepless with worries about the future, today, they can shake off their worries and find solace in a sip of hot soup. Kim Hae-sook, a woman in her 50s who had been living as a wife and mother, and her friends, who had forgotten themselves, traveled to Seoul for the first time in their lives a week ago. They were fooled by someone's outrageous prank, saying, "You can't enter unless you're wearing hanbok," and were unable to even set foot in Gyeongbokgung Palace. But she smiles like a girl as she recalls that moment. It's a time to find time for herself and enjoy delicious conversation with friends. Just because she's shaken off her worries, doesn't mean her life's journey is light! A generous bowl of udon noodles embodies the joys and sorrows of a life steeped in both heat and spice, while the sizzling, charcoal-grilled bulgogi briquettes are brimming with flavorful philosophies about life. Bukseong-ro Pojangmacha Alley, a romantic and happy space, offers a lightening of the hearts of young people, taking into account their modest financial circumstances, and evokes in the middle-aged a time when no one was more fortunate or less fortunate. There's a common mantra that opens the door to happiness here every night: "Eat, drink, and share life." ■ A life of charcoal briquettes, 365 days a year The charcoal briquettes of Bukseong-ro Alley rarely go out, even after work. For 23 years, there's someone who has been silently keeping this "life-giving fire" burning: the pojangmacha owner, Lim Seong-sun. Because the charcoal briquettes fed and clothed her family, she was able to endure the harsh smoke and the arduous nights of work. And yet, there's another briquette that burns diligently, fulfilling a promise to her wife. These are the briquettes from Jang Ho-jin, owner of the original street food stall on Bukseong-ro for 19 years. For Jang Ho-jin, the charcoal-fired bulgogi stall is his life, a 20-year partnership, and a hope that allows him to keep a promise to his family.
