Documentary Day 3: "Dike's Scales - 72 Hours at the Seoul Southern District Court" ■ The Court, a Mirror Reflecting South Korea The Seoul Southern District Court, located in Sinjeong-dong, Yangcheon-gu, is one of the 60 or so judicial institutions in South Korea and one of the five district courts in Seoul. Every morning at 9:30, starting with a summary trial, the courtrooms of some 20 are filled with people seeking the truth: plaintiffs, defendants, prosecutors, lawyers, judges, and others. From a defendant charged with gambling after playing a 10-won game of Go-Stop at a dog meat restaurant on Boknal (the hottest day of the year), to an attempted murderer who attempted to murder a lover who had changed her mind, the courts adjudicate the conflicts and disputes of approximately 2 million people across five districts: Yeongdeungpo-gu, Gangseo-gu, Yangcheon-gu, Guro-gu, and Geumcheon-gu. In a world where an average of three murders occur daily, a person could find themselves in court at any moment if they're not careful. What will South Korea be like in 2008? ■ Documentary 3 Days, Entering the Courtroom! What do prosecutors, lawyers, and judges do? What are the differences between criminal and civil trials? How do we distinguish between defendants and accused? What crimes are we unaware of? High-barrier courts, trials only seen in dramas. Curious about the hidden world of the courts? The documentary 3 Days takes us to the Seoul Southern District Court for 72 hours. We witness the trial process amidst the sharp conflict between those seeking the truth. ■ Where Truth Confronts Truth: The Injustices of This Land What if you receive a court summons one day? Even though the barriers to entry have been lowered, courts are still inconvenient for the average person, and judges are still terrifying figures. A truck driver facing a 3 million won fine for drunk driving faces a dwindling 3 million won fine. He admits his wrongdoing, but with his extended family's livelihood at stake, he visits the court with his wife, hoping to plead with the judge and have the fine reduced. Meanwhile, a defendant facing obstruction of justice pleads his innocence. He was mistaken for a kidnapper and scuffled with the police. He was ultimately cleared of the charges, but before the judge, who gave him his final argument, he wept after telling the story of his young daughters, who were present at his arrest. A wife, also accused of her husband's murder, came for a warrant hearing. She offered an alibi to the judge's questions, claiming she knew nothing about the incident. In the courtroom, the judge's gaze shifted between those who claimed their case was unjust and those who sought to uncover the truth. Will they finally find the truth? ■ The First Citizens' Participation Trial at the Southern District Court... Murder or Assault and Manslaughter The 24th citizen participation trial, which began at the Daegu District Court in January, opened at the Seoul Southern District Court on July 22nd. The case involved a murder case involving a Korean-Chinese defendant. The jury had to determine the intent of the murder and decide whether to convict him of murder or assault and manslaughter. The tension on the jurors' faces radiated throughout the 12-hour trial, as it was a matter of life and death. The prosecutor presents CCTV footage of the defendant's crime scene and the shoe used as the murder weapon, arguing for murder. The defendant bows his head, while the lawyer, explaining his difficult upbringing, argues that the murder was not intentional. Each year, an average of 100 take the bar exam and complete training courses before becoming judges. While it's considered a coveted profession, South Korean judges call themselves swans. Each judge at the Southern District Court presides over around 20 cases, racking their brains to read the records and synthesizing the evidence to draft verdicts. While they may not be able to avenge everyone, their primary goal is to prevent anyone from being wronged.
