Røros - Pjalt, Reindeer Meat and Arctic Char | At our Neighbour's Table

In Røros, central Norway, Hilde and Mattis Danielsen live with their children, Signe Marja and Jåvva. They belong to the indigenous Sámi people and make a living in part through reindeer herding. The high plateau surrounding Røros offers expansive grazing grounds for their herds — even in winter, the animals can still find mosses and lichens beneath the snow. Reindeer meat is a staple of the regional cuisine, which is hearty and nourishing not just during the colder months. Meals include boiled reindeer in a strong broth or fillets cooked over an open fire. The landscape is dotted with frozen lakes nestled among birch and spruce forests, home to grayling, trout, pike, and Arctic char. Another specialty typical of Røros is Pjalt — a kind of Norwegian pancake.
