Why isn't the USA better at soccer?

At the inaugural FIFA World Cup in 1930, the United States Men's Soccer Team finished third in the world. Ninety-six years later, the country of the United States of America has almost tripled in population. The US has built the world’s pre-eminent basketball league, baseball league, and gridiron football league. But when it comes to the biggest sport in the world, at the world’s biggest sporting event, we have never done what those guys on that boat did. So… something’s clearly gone wrong.
