Spanish assistance to the War of Independence was so significant and substantial that it is truly difficult to understand how it could have been concealed for 250 years. American historiography has systematically and remarkably successfully obscured Spain's role in the American Revolutionary War, despite it being the most significant aid the United States received. This work sheds light on previously unknown aspects and addresses issues of enormous relevance: the prior negotiations between all parties, the ever-complex relationship with France, and the ambiguity of its politicians and military leaders, leading us to question whether they were truly allies of Spain or its worst enemies. The book examines the enemies and the behavior of the American envoys before the Spanish court. All the protagonists, not just the main figures, and the most important events parade through its pages, avoiding triumphalism and victimhood, as both are enemies of the truth. It clarifies what was paid for, who paid it, to whom it was surrendered, and, above all, who had to sacrifice themselves so that the United States can continue to celebrate its independence today. Finally, it examines how peace was negotiated and who its architects were, as well as those grateful for such a timely and selfless gesture, and what Spain obtained in return for such generosity.
