Adultos mayores LGBTI+ en Ciudad de México

Samantha Flores is a 91-year-old transgender woman and activist from Mexico City. There, in 2018, she founded the "Vida Alegre" (Happy Life) shelter for older adults in the LGBTQ+ community. The day center was closed without explicit reason by city authorities. But Samantha refuses to give up. Few people in her community have lived past 60, as the life expectancy of the trans community is especially low. Victims of violence and poverty, older LGBTQ+ people must fight to survive. According to Samantha, older adults generally suffer from loneliness and abandonment. But "when older LGBTQ+ people reach old age, they are excluded from their families and have to go back into the closet. Older adults are forgotten, they don't exist; we are invisible," says Samantha, who has become a role model within and beyond the trans community in Mexico, has participated in various fashion campaigns, and has been featured on the covers of famous magazines. #ListenToDW Report by: Aitor Sáez Medina Post-production: Octavio García Soto General coordination: Verónica Marchiaro
