Understanding Toxicology: Fundamentals and Management of Acute Poisoning We will explore the fundamental concepts of this vital science, which studies how external substances interact with our bodies and the principles of treatment. As Paracelsus said: "All substances are toxic, only the dose determines whether it is toxic or not." There are no innocuous substances, only harmless ways of handling them. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In this video, you will learn: • Essential Concepts of Toxicology: ◦ Xenobiotic: Any substance external to the body, such as drugs or contaminants. ◦ Toxicology: The scientific study of xenobiotics, their behavior, action, injuries, and treatment. ◦ Toxic: A substance capable of producing alterations or death; any substance can be toxic in the right dose. ◦ Toxin: Protein molecules of natural origin (animals, plants, bacteria) that cause toxic effects. • Poison: A substance that, in small doses, destroys or severely deteriorates organs and tissues. • LD50 (Lethal Dose 50): The dose required to cause death in 50% of test animals. • Toxicity Factors: Influenced by dose, chemical characteristics, route of administration (skin, ingestion, inhalation, injection), exposure time, and the individual's health. • When to Suspect Poisoning: Be alert to multisystem involvement, sudden onset of symptoms, severe gastrointestinal symptoms, unconsciousness, or seizures without apparent cause. • Toxidromes: Groups of symptoms and clinical signs characteristic of toxins with similar mechanisms of action, evaluating vital signs, mental status, eyes (miosis/mydriasis), gastrointestinal system, and skin. Remember the "three Ps": Pupil, Peristalsis, and Skin. • Principles of Treatment: 1. Maintain vital functions. 2. Eliminate the toxic substance according to the route of entry and prevent further absorption. 3. Eliminate the substance already absorbed. 4.
