This October 4th, we celebrate the anniversary of the liberation of Corsica. Talking about the first department to be liberated from Italian and German occupation during World War II is an opportunity to address many phenomena: A very active local resistance (the "patriots") supported by De Gaulle and Henri Giraud, notably through the numerous missions of the submarine Casabianca and its captain, the Herminier. A violent Italian occupation that turned into an ambiguous cohabitation with German soldiers. French troops (with an overrepresentation of Moroccan troops) who, with whatever means at hand, went to the rescue of the island's resistance fighters. 🔎Sources: Historia magazine n°55: the liberation of Corsica “Corsica under the Occupation”: Éditions-Dumane.com “Liberation of Corsica” by Fernand Gambiez “Italian troops and the liberation of Corsica” on resistance-corse.asso https://www.defense.gouv.fr/80-ans-li... https://www.cheminsdememoire.gouv.fr/...
