L’Assalto dei Disperati: Come gli Italiani Sfondarono a Nikolajewka

In January 1943, thousands of Italian soldiers advanced through the Russian steppe in temperatures nearing fifty degrees below zero. They were starving, wounded, frostbitten, and surrounded by the Red Army. Only one obstacle stood before them: Nikolayevka, a small village protected by a railway embankment transformed into a formidable Soviet defensive line. In this documentary, we reconstruct the tragic retreat of the ARMIR (Italian Army in Russia) and the battle fought on January 26, 1943, by the Alpini of the Tridentina Division and the survivors of the Alpine Army Corps. Through historical facts, testimonies, and anecdotes from veterans, we will relive the desperate assault led by General Luigi Reverberi, the sacrifice of General Giulio Martinat, and the tireless work of Father Carlo Gnocchi among the wounded. We will also recount the famous episode experienced by Mario Rigoni Stern inside an izba, where Italians and Soviets, for a few brief moments, managed to recognize each other simply as human beings. Nikolayevka was not a traditional military victory, but an extreme struggle to survive, protect comrades, and find the way back home. It was the symbol of a political and military tragedy, but also of an extraordinary courage born in the darkest hour. Step by step, we will follow the march through the snow, the Soviet blockades, the desperation of the wounded, and the cry "Tridentina, forward!", which became the symbol of human endurance beyond all imaginable limits. A journey into the white hell of the Russian Front, amidst freezing cold, hunger, sacrifice, and solidarity, to understand one of the most dramatic pages of Italian history and memory.
