The fame of weapons made by the workers of Bengal once spread throughout India. The forges of the remote villages of Birbhum and Burdwan reached the highest peak of metallurgy. That golden past is far away today. Yet, even today, a few people like Tamal Karmakar of Kharun village in Birbhum have retained the practice of making weapons. With the magic of their hands, sharpened swords or axes are still born in the hot chimneys of the forges. These swords still sting when you hold them in your hands. The custom of sacrificing animals in various temples and Shaktipeeths of eastern India is still practiced using the swords made by Tamal Babu. Today, through this short interview, I have told the story of one such worker and his forge in a remote village of Bengal.
