Five years later, the promise finally becomes a reality: Salvador's Light Rail Transit (VLT) is running in tests, and the population will be using it in 2026. On April 2, 2026, Lula and Governor Jerônimo visited Salvador and witnessed the unprecedented: sections of the VLT operating in tests at Praça Onze de Dezembro. It was no longer a promise — these were modern trains running on energized tracks. The West Expansion of the system was authorized, and the service order for the metro was signed. CONSTRUCTION PROGRESS: Section 1 (Ilha São João-Calçada-Comércio): 60% completed, 21 km of permanent track, 4 km energized, operational tests underway NOW. Section 2 (Paripe-Águas Claras): 40% complete, receiving tracks since January 2026, will have integration with the metro. Section 3 (Águas Claras-Piatã): initial phase, will expand access to the city center and the waterfront. Two URBOS 3 model trains are already in Salvador. 17 more will arrive in 2026, totaling 40 trains with cutting-edge technology: free WiFi, cameras with artificial intelligence, digital panels and electric traction. SCHEDULE: 1st semester 2026: Technical tests (IN PROGRESS). 2nd semester 2026: Assisted operation WITHOUT FARE with 5 km available for the public to use. 2028: Complete conclusion. NUMBERS: 43.7 km in length, 50 stops, 100,000 passengers/day, R$ 5.4 billion invested (R$ 1.1 billion federal). José Carlos Santos, a 38-year-old street vendor: "We've always had difficulties with transportation. When you see a construction project underway, it gives you hope. It will make it easier to work, study, and get around." After 5 years of paying 10 times more for transportation, 5 years of promises, the Suburb finally sees the light.
