If you only use downward movement, it becomes a leg-only turn, leading to uncontrolled speed. ■Confirmation in Horizontal Slides What we confirmed in horizontal slides was the importance of applying strong weight with edge angle. If you can decelerate before hitting the moguls, you can hit the moguls with confidence, and the transition will be smoother without rushing. If you only use weight, you are more likely to slide uncontrollably, lose your composure on the moguls, and rush during transitions. When transitioning, it is important to maintain a straight downhill posture with your shins touching your boots. We also practiced this with the wedge stance, but be sure to remember that feeling! ■Transition to Vertical Slides While horizontal slides involve downward weighting, vertical slides involve diagonal weighting. Imagine sliding sideways in the direction your skis are pointing when they're in a V-shape. The important thing to remember is to avoid shifting your weight downwards when doing this repeatedly. Since the weight will be applied diagonally, focus on developing the feeling of the ski tips sliding! Also, creating an outward lean in the direction of your weight will generate stronger weight and make it easier to control your speed. To achieve this, try touching the snow with your outside hand, or pointing the pole ring in the direction of the slide. The key point is to keep your hands from rising too high. If your hands are too high, your upper body will also tend to rise, so focus on keeping them low! We also want to ensure proper movement to the outside leg, so try incorporating the movements I demonstrated, such as jumping or switching skis using only the outside leg. In the latter half, everyone's skiing movements were mostly vertical slides. You can gradually strengthen your weight distribution and angulation.
