Recreating Spielberg’s Most Emotional Goodbye | E.T. Diorama Build
With Disclosure Day releasing this week, it felt like the perfect time to revisit one of Steven Spielberg’s most emotional alien stories: E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. In this video, I recreate the final “Saying Goodbye” scene from E.T. as a miniature diorama, featuring a lit model of the iconic alien spaceship, forest terrain, miniature trees, atmospheric lighting, and tiny 1:152 scale figures of Elliott, E.T., and the characters gathered for the final farewell. The centerpiece of the build is a scratch-built E.T. spaceship model about the size of a softball, detailed with internal lighting, fiber optics, and surface texture inspired by the original ILM filming miniature. The goal was to capture the strange, warm glow of the spacecraft while keeping the focus on the emotional feeling of the scene. This diorama build explores the power of practical effects, miniatures, puppets, sets, lighting, and music — and how, when they work together, they can disappear into something much bigger than the individual pieces. Because the final scene of E.T. isn’t remembered just because of the spaceship. It’s remembered because of the goodbye.
