Mikhail Tal’s 1st recorded game was NOT surprising
Featured is the 1st recorded game by Mikhail Tal. It was played during a simultaneous exhibition in 1949, held by Master Ratmir Kholmov. The opening is a Semi-Slav Defense, Botvinnik variation where Kholmov unwisely exchanges his dark-squared bishop for Tal’s knight. In the middlegame, Kholmov gives up a second pawn to open lines towards a black king who has not yet found safe shelter. The 12-year-old Mikhail Tal leveraged his furthest advanced pawn, using it to fully active his queen rook. Should we be surprised at what soon followed in this game by a player who would eventually be known as “The Magician from Riga”? I'm a self-taught National Master in chess out of Pennsylvania, USA who was introduced to the game by my father in 1988 at the age of 8. The purpose of this channel is to share my knowledge of chess to help others improve their game. I enjoy continuing to improve my understanding of this great game, albeit slowly.
