As the pregnancy progresses, the growing uterus puts pressure on the diaphragm, restricting its movement and reducing lung capacity. This physiological change can lead to a feeling of breathlessness, especially in the later stages of pregnancy. Hormonal shifts also play a role. Elevated levels of progesterone affect the respiratory center in the brain, increasing the sensitivity to carbon dioxide and prompting faster breathing. Additionally, the increased blood volume during pregnancy requires more oxygen, further contributing to the sensation of breathlessness. In the third trimester, the expanding uterus can compress the inferior vena cava—a large vein that returns blood from the lower body to the heart. This compression may cause a decrease in blood return to the heart, leading to a drop in blood pressure and exacerbating the feeling of shortness of breath. While mild shortness of breath is considered normal during pregnancy, it's essential to differentiate it from more serious conditions like preeclampsia or pulmonary embolism. Any sudden or severe respiratory distress, accompanied by other concerning symptoms such as chest pain or swelling, should be promptly reported to a healthcare provider for evaluation and appropriate management. To alleviate mild shortness of breath, pregnant women are advised to practice good posture, avoid lying flat on their backs, and take breaks to rest when needed. Staying hydrated and engaging in gentle exercises, like prenatal yoga, can also help improve overall respiratory function. Always consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice based on individual health conditions. FOLLOW ME ON INSTA @DR.AISHAASAD JOIN FACEBOOK GROUP "SEHAT KI BAAT"
