Who Were the Colchians? The Forgotten Civilization at the Heart of Greek Mythology
The Golden Fleece is one of the most famous stories in Greek mythology — but how much of it is actually myth? As an archaeologist, I've been digging into the evidence, and the answer is more surprising than you'd expect. In this video we follow the story from its roots in Bronze Age Greece all the way to the eastern shore of the Black Sea — to a real kingdom called Colchis, home of a real people called the Colchians. We look at what excavations at sites like Vani in modern Georgia have uncovered, why geologists now believe the "Golden Fleece" may have been a literal gold-mining technique, and how the archaeological timeline lines up — and sometimes clashes — with the dates the ancient Greeks themselves gave to the story. We also revisit Herodotus, who had quite a lot to say about the Colchians — if you caught my last video, this one picks up right where that left off. In this video: The myth of Jason and the Argonauts — and the details that matter archaeologically Who the Colchians actually were, and what Herodotus wrote about them The sheepskin gold-mining theory and the geological evidence behind it The archaeological timetable: Bronze Age Mycenaeans, Black Sea colonization, and where the myth fits The snake-guardian temples of western Georgia — and what they confirm about the legend Why some myths are compressed history, not invented fantasy Artifacts from ancient Colchis can be found at the Georgian National Museum (Tbilisi) and have been exhibited at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. 📚 Sources & Further Reading: Apollonius of Rhodes, Argonautica Herodotus, Histories (Book II & Book III) World History Encyclopedia — Jason & the Argonauts Fitzwilliam Museum — From the Land of the Golden Fleece exhibition: https://golden-fleece.fitzmuseum.cam....
