That's right. It was scrapped. This is the story of the Gyeongbokho, a special presidential train built in 2001 that has existed until now, and which remained Korea's only diesel multiple unit until recently. Actually, it is so famous that there is hardly anything to explain 😂 It was built based on the Saemaeulho PP train and consisted of two 4-car trainsets; one set was the main car where the President boarded, and the other was the security car where security personnel and reporters boarded. Because the focus had to be on security and protection due to the nature of carrying the President, it was a train equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, including bulletproof design, radio jamming facilities, and a design capable of operating on different track gauges. Although this train ran several times for purposes such as test runs or disrupting movement routes, it is known that it was not frequently used for the actual transportation of the President. This appears to be because, after the creation of KTX-based special trains such as the KTX-1 and KTX-Sancheon, travel was primarily carried out via KTX. It was the only vehicle designed for variable gauge in preparation for a potential extension across North Korea to the continent following the restoration of the Gyeongui Line, but it was ultimately scrapped without ever realizing that dream. This train, which disappeared leaving a record as Korea's last diesel multiple unit... However, while it was removed from the fleet register, the actual train still remains. It is actually scheduled to be exhibited at the newly constructed Railway Museum. I eagerly await the day it will be displayed alongside the Megi Teukdong currently on display. 😉 Today, we present the Gyeongbokho, now free to speak and be seen as it has been removed from the fleet register and its official duties have been relieved.
